Death Notice: Nikki Chipp (aka 3rd i)
« on: August 25, 2006, 04:57:51 PM »
Tishana Nikki Chipp (also known to some as 3rd i) took her life on between Sunday night/Monday sometime. She was living in Atlanta at the time. There may or may not have been an article in the paper (I've heard that there was, but have received no confirmation to the information).

I'm not sure how many of you would even know who she is.  But Nikki volunteered as a runner at the 2003 National Poetry Slam while she was living in Chicago.  She was a frequent poster on Okayplayer.com (home of The Roots) in both their Freestyle/Poetry Forum and their General Discussion forum. She was not what one would consider a slam poet, but she was a poet, nonetheless.  She was a wonderful writer, human being, one of the nicest people you'd ever have the luxury of meeting and someone who left us too soon. She was young, vibrant, a beautiful spirit and she was my friend. And I didn't know she was in a bad way. And there's nothing I can do to help her now.

I'm not asking anyone to say a prayer for her (if you do, that is your perogative).  I am however, imploring you to please reach out and speak up if you are battling depression or entertaining thoughts of suicide.  It's not the answer.  Seek the help that can save your life.
*The views expressed by Delrica are not that of PSi nor the Executive Council. Her gems are her own...deal with it*

I have to add, watch out for your friends and loved ones.  Some of the signs are not as obvious as you'd think, and it is a very deep hole out of which to climb.  The acadmics provide the following list of suicide warning signs:

LOSS/REJECTION
Loss of a parent, close relative, friend, other significant person or pet.
Loss of self-esteem
Loss of a job
Loss of physical health
Loss of achievement
Rejection by peers, family, authority figures or other significant persons

DEPRESSION
Changes in sleeping and eating patterns
Problems concentrating
Noticeable loss or gain of weight
Neglect of personal appearance
Abrupt change in personality and behavior (Unusual withdrawal, aggression or moodiness).
Increase in alcohol and/or drug use
Rebellion and hostility
Withdrawing from friends and activities
Appearing sad most of the time
Sudden drop in school performance

VERBAL CLUES
Some verbal signs are direct, others are vague or coded.

"I'm going to kill myself."
"What would you think of someone who committed suicide?"

BEHAVIOR
Previous suicide attempts
Giving away special possessions
Vague complaints about health
Unusual calmness after a loss or period of depression
Crying
Suicidal notes, poems, journal or diary entries

I'm very sorry, Delrica, for the lost of your friend. I vaguely remember her from Nats but didn't see her around Chicago much.
