General Discussion / Re: Thank You Austin & NPS 2007
« on: August 14, 2007, 07:48:12 AM »
Peace and Blessings_

It is always good to be in the presence of good people, warms spirits, and awesome poets. That was the grand sum of things for the entire week.

I speak on behalf of myself and SlamCharlotte. We were honored to have the opportunity to compete in NPS 2007. The teams we bouted against were amazing. I was blown away by the level of poetry I experienced throughout the week.

Austin is definitely a city that I would consider living in. The poetry community/supporters blow me away.

Sincere thanks to PSI-especially Steve Marsh for always being available to answer my million and one questions, the host city, Austin residents/businesses, the competing teams, our family and friends that traveled to Austin to support us, our family and friends that were with us in spirit, Respect Da Mic, our sponsors, Dasha and Madison for accepting the challenge for 2 years in a row, the volunteers, and each and every person who believed in us in spite of our faults.

I just want to say that Tempe should be proud of work that your poets did. It is awesome to rank in the top 25 teams at NPS and even more impressive during your first year there.

I don't have the facts about the protest and really don't need to be made aware of them at this point.

I do however have concern with the way this is being handled. I understand being upset and feeling like you were treated unfairly but to attempt to discredit PSI, the EC, and the protest committee seems a tad bit over the edge.

Where is the Tempe slam master in all of this? Shouldn't he/she be the one contacting the EC to discuss the allegations and to determine what can be done?

I'm not saying you shouldn't speak out regarding the issue if you feel you have been wronged. I am suggesting that you approach this situation in a different light.

I think you are creating more problems for your poetry community and yourself in the long run by allowing emotion to dictate your actions. You have to remove yourself from the situation and look at the entire picture.  It's not what you say but how you say it.

I feel for you and your team, especially if you guys did nothing wrong to warrant being disqualified.

I suggest that the Tempe slam master and/or the team create a "professional" letter to the EC regarding your concerns. I urge you to stop using this forum as a smear campaign.

Adding fuel to a burning fire never helps save the foundation. In the end, the foundation burns and you have nothing to show for it but burned hands and the inability to acquire resources to rebuild.

Keep your head up. Take this time to gather your documentation and create the letter to the EC and go from there.

General Discussion / Re: Nats HOTEL question ATTN: Mike

It is actually cheaper to sign up for t-Mobile through their website on their monthly plan and cancel if after 30 days. That's what I did last year. I ended the service on the 28th day without a problem. It is cheaper that way. If you are arriving Monday and staying through Sunday you would spend $70 if you did the daily plan. If I remember correctly the monthly plan is unlimited usage for $40. Check the link out below.

Question about registration -

is the 1 pm - 5 pm an open door sort of thing, or do I need to plan on being there for that four-hour stretch?

You will not have to be at registration for entire time. You will just register your team and then go enjoy Austin until orientation or whatever other activity you take part in that day.

I was unable to login. I deleted cookies and tried again and was told my user name and password were not correct. I did have to log into the forums again afterwards.

SlamCharlotte does a gauntlet slam every May. It is five rounds: They include 1 minute, improv, head to head Haiku death match, anything goes, and the last round is 3 minutes.

General Discussion / New Requirements for Travelers

New Requirements for Travelers
Under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI)

The proposed implementation timeline has two phases:

Beginning January 23, 2007, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document.

As early as January 1, 2008, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. While recent legislative changes permit a later deadline, the Departments of State and Homeland Security are working to meet all requirements as soon as possible. Ample advance notice will be provided to enable the public to obtain passports or passport cards for land/sea entries.
