General Discussion / Re: Poetry Slam vs. Poetry Reading Series
« on: October 25, 2016, 09:47:31 AM »
These terms are sometimes to be used interchangeably in the handbook. What are "Poetry Reading Series," and do they fulfill the min 6 events a year rule?

While sometimes slams are also considered "poetry reading series'", to be certified a venue must have 6 slams a year.  For instance, if an event operates as an open mic every week, but has a slam once a month, they'd be set.  Does that make sense?

Hello family,

I am new to Poetry Slams. I've hosted/organized 4 poetry events so far and would like to start doing Poetry Slams. What are the steps, rules, play-book etc. Tips? Would appreciate any help here. Really appreciate it :)  :)

What city/state are you located in?

You can find a lot of helpful info on the website, including info on where your nearest local poetry slam is (http://poetryslam.com/slam-list/), as well as how to start your own (http://poetryslam.com/faq/#14).

General Discussion / Re: Vancouver poet Zaccheus Jackson, RIP :(
« on: August 28, 2014, 10:57:41 AM »
My heart goes out to the Vancouver Poetry Slam community, and to all who knew and loved Zaccheus Jackson. I met him only briefly at the National Poetry Slam in Oakland, and his words were moving. May he rest in peace.

Here is Zaccheus' facebook page. He was on the Vancouver team this year at NPS.

is there a place to see scores for Finals stage and how the Finals shaped up from the inception of NPS to now?

As far as historical data, they live on as legend in our hearts and minds.

As for the most recent NPS Finals, they can be found here - thank you, Tova Charles:

General Discussion / Re: QUESTION: Free Speech vs An Audience Rights
« on: September 23, 2013, 10:48:31 PM »
The problem was  that for the first time ever, we were told "Do Not Read Those Poems Again- Bad!"

I guess I'm just seeing that as an extension of audience reaction.

Don't they co-exist?  Poets have free speech, the audience has the right to respond, yes?
