General Discussion / NPS 2014 MCs and Bout Managers!
« on: June 07, 2014, 06:38:30 AM »
NPS 2014 is only a few short months away. It's in Oakland, CA on August 5 - 9, and represents the first time we have been able to go to the west coast since we were all babies.

So if you are thinking of going, but not competing, I'd love to have you come and experience the exquisite stress that is volunteering to run bouts. No need to decide this minute, I can wait until you lose your qualifier because of some clearly terrible and drunk judges.

When you are ready - click this internet hyperlink - http://lists.poetryslam.com/?p=subscribe&id=3and add yourself to the list. Once you do, I'll send you some more information periodically as NPS draws near.

Thank you.

General Discussion / The NPS 2013 Call for MCs and Bout Managers
« on: June 17, 2013, 07:24:17 AM »
If you are an experienced and energetic showperson, PSi wants your help.

If you lost your NPS qualifier but still want to experience the awesome show that is NPS, be an MC !

If you have been thinking, "How do I get involved in the organization ?" Be a Bout Manager !

If you have Bout Managed for PSI before and are looking to step up to MC, now is your chance!

Requirements: PSi membership (You can get this here on the web site!), A lot of Slam experience, a great attitude, the ability to show up in Boston on time (it's important!), working knowledge of NPS rules a plus. Prior WoWPS, IWPS or NPS experience is valued but not a requirement.

There are a limited number of spots for MCs and bout managers at NPS so get your name in early. You will receive a volunteer pass to the event which gives you access to all day and evening events (not always including the finals), just like the poets, and possibly more stage time than the poets themselves !

There will be daily meetings for MCs and Bout Managers starting on Tuesday.  Attendance at the meeting is mandatory, if you can't make the days meeting, you can't work that night.  I strongly recommend you attend 1 of the 2 NPS Orientation meetings, so you are, you know, oriented.

Where: The National Poetry Slam will be in Greater Boston, MA.
When: August 13-17, 2013
Who: All the cool kids (and also me)

Did you know that the Slammaster's council updated the NPS Rules in Denver this year?  Make sure you understand the rules before you send up your poets.

I suggest you pay particular attention to the section on "Group Pieces". Don't lose NPS because you sent up the wrong poet!

Slam Selection Processes / NYC - Nuyorican
« on: February 14, 2012, 04:21:42 PM »
Nuyorican Poets Cafe
236 East 3rd Street
NY, NY 10009
http://www.nuyorican.org/

We are located on Manhattan's Lower East Side at 236 East 3rd Street between Avenue B and Avenue C.

Every Weds Night except first Weds of the month 9PM
Every Friday Night 10pm

Poetry Slam @the Nuyorican is truly poetry of and by the people. Winners of any Nuyorican Poetry Slam are chosen entirely by our varied audience members; a continual stream of changing faces, ages and backgrounds that make up New York City on any given night. Audience judges are not required to have any special skills or history and that's what always makes our slam so exciting and unpredictable.

Many Poetry Slammers have begun their careers in either the Wednesday Night Slam Open or the Open Room. Some will come back and compete many times before winning a slam, so keep on coming! 2008 National Team member, Rico Steal, began his career at the Nuyorican in the Open Room and didn't quit until he was slamming on Friday Nights!

Winner of Wednesday Night Slam Open is eligible to compete in a Friday Night Slam. If you win a Friday Night Slam, you are eligible to compete in one of the five Semi-Final Poetry Slams that happen throughout our Slam season.

If you win a Semi-Final slam, you will become one of five poets to compete in our yearly Grand Slam Finale, which generally happens in April. The winner of that slam takes the Grand Slam Champion title for that year and immediately qualifies to be on our National Team. The rest of our yearly National Team comes out of three Run-Off Slams, which happen after the Grand Slam Finale. We send these team members to compete yearly in the National Poetry Slam. To learn more about our National Teams through the years, click here.

Spotlight Poets are featured before the Slam each Friday Night and are curated by the Nuyorican SlamMaster.

General Discussion / Would you use this? (Short Poll)
« on: November 15, 2007, 07:41:57 AM »
Question 1.
As a performance poet, if there were a monster.com type website for booking features, would you use such a service?

Question 2.
As a person that books features for evening shows in coffee houses, clubs, bars, and/or schools, would you use a centralized database of performing poets with access to their work, touring dates, and fees?

Question 3.
As a PSI Slammaster, would you appreciate it if you were immediately given a website when you certified? (Including a newsletter tool, Blog, etc.) Would you use this service?
