Forum Announcements And Rules / Software Upgrade
« on: June 16, 2012, 08:24:09 AM »
As you might have noticed, I upgraded the forum software.

This should improve overall performance, in addition to giving us some new features.

During the course of the upgrade, I also deleted inactive (spam) members. This trimmed the memberlist from 41000+ members, to just under 3500 members. The purge did not include any active members.

I also added some new anti-spam features. Hopefully that will stem the tide of spam posts, giving Simone a break from  having to manually delete them every ^$#%ing day.

If you have any problems, please post here, and I will do my best to take care of it.

Regards,
Erik Daniel

Forum Announcements And Rules / New Slammasters READ THIS!!!
« on: August 20, 2011, 08:11:23 AM »
First, thanks for doing what you do!  Without dedicated Slammasters like you, there would be no poetry slam!

For new Slammasters, the learning curve is a little steep. There is a lot of information you need to know, much of it is right here in this forum.

The first thing you need to do is get access to the private Slammaster's section of the forum. You do that by going to this thread and following the instructions:

I banned this robot, but I can't bring myself to delete this post. This spambot has talent.

Quote
... a heavy-set depict across sympathetic barricade...
follow excess present up to fieriness and steam look in the ever-expanding ‘yachting galley and bathroom' ranges..

That's some poetry right there.

Optimistically.
Cuz this site is popular.

This is a spammer from China. I haven't deleted this individual because no links were posted, and that avatar is just too cute to remove.

I also added even more anti-spam features to the forum, but if this situation doesn't improve, I might need to switch software.  I spend time every day deleting posts from this forum.

Just wondering - can a banned slam fan see this post?

/sneerk!

Yes. This area is visible to unauthenticated users, they just can't post.

General Discussion / Surge in Spam Members/Posts
« on: October 30, 2009, 07:17:37 AM »
Hello Friends!
We must have made some sort of Spam list, because there has been a surge in new registrations by individuals whose sole purpose seems to be posting links to websites none of us will ever need.

They seem to be real humans, as they are replying to activation emails, and even sending some emails to me if they get caught by the blacklist.

As a result, I have made some changes to the forum, notably removing the signature and website fields from the profile edit screen for users under a certain number of posts.

I am taking a very aggressive stance towards these posts. Any post which looks off-topic by a brand-new member are getting deleted, and the member banned.

If you see one of these fake posts, hit the "Report" button, and I will get rid of it as soon as possible.

If you are a slam fan, not a spammer, and I banned you, just contact me here, and I will bring you back.

If you are a spammer, ask yourself if this is really what you want to be doing with your life.

Warm regards,
-Erik

General Discussion / Put Your Slam on the Google Map!
« on: June 25, 2009, 08:40:09 PM »
Since it was taking so long to fix the directory, I created a Google Map and made it public.

You can check it out here.

You can add your slam to this map using Google Maps. You need to have a Google account.
  • Follow this link
  • Log in with your Google account if necessary
  • Click "Save to My Maps"
  • Search for your venue address
  • Click the map icon
  • Click the "Save to my maps" link
  • Choose Poetry Slam in the drop down
  • You can edit the info an even add images
  • Make sure you click Save under the map
  • Your entry will now show up on the public map

I am still working on the "Official" directory/map, but we need this now so here it is.  If you don't have a Google account, or have crazy problems with this, just post your info in this thread, and I'm sure a kindly nerd will post it for you.

edit: Link fixed, thanks Jesster!

Forum Announcements And Rules / Changes to Forum/Poetryslam.com Feb-2008
« on: February 24, 2008, 05:34:43 PM »
In order to begin taking additional payment processors, we needed to be able use our SSL certificate and encryption on the store section of this site.  Unfortunately, the forum software didn't really like that at all, and it broke everything on the Test Server and made me a very sad panda.

To solve this problem, I have to split the forums off again.  Most of you won't notice, since all you use is the forum.

What this means to you
  • Your login and password will still work in both places, until you change it
  • If you change your password on the forum, it will not change on the store
  • New Members will need to create a separate account for the store (to purchase memberships) and the forum (to post here)

This is a step back to where we used to be, and I am working on a fix for this issue.

If you have problems, PM me or send an email to support [at] poetryslam.com

General Discussion / Forum Downtime
« on: January 31, 2008, 01:06:33 PM »
We had some unexpected downtime that started yesterday morning, which resulted in a database revert to a backup.  I do not believe we lost any posts, as the board automatically locked when the errors started to hit.  If you notice any errors or missing posts, please post them here.

The issue was not a hack, but a error that accumulated an large amount (75 Megabytes) of data, which ended up crashing the DB.  This should not happen again.

It has highlighted the clunky process by which we restore backups.  I am going to set up our own automatic daily backups which will allow me to make restorations much faster.

Please accept my sincere apologies for the technical difficulties we are experiencing.

About the registration issues:
The registration process should not have been affected prior to the issue, but there
have been other issues with some user's systems, and the registration process. Until I get the system in an ironclad foolproof format, I am more than happy to make manual edits to the database to get things operating properly.

I am working on a significant upgrade to our system to make this process easier for everyone involved, as well as a documentation program to disseminate information in a friendlier fashion.

I am really sorry about the problems you have all faced, and I am working diligently to avoid future issues.

You are given access to the Staff forum because you are a member of the WOW Coordinator Staff, and that group has access to both the Staff Forum, and the WOW Coordinator Forum.

If anyone has access to a forum they don't think they should have access to, please PM me or ScottWoods.

General Discussion / Sorry About the Downtime
« on: April 11, 2007, 09:00:39 AM »
Had a little issue with the SQL server, which corrupted a table in the forum database.

Everything should be fine now, and we  didn't lose any data.

I apologize for the in convenience.
