Knoxville Poetry Slam
The Ink 221 Cumberland Ave.
Knoxville TN 37902
2nd and 4th Fridays of every month

The following is Knoxville Poetry Slam's slam team selection process.

The following points will be awarded throughout the regular season.  At the end of the season the points still be tallied, and our slam teams will be decided by which poets are at the top of the leaderboard.

These points will be rewarded in accordance with the results of the monthly slam.

1st place: 5 points
2nd place: 4 points
3rd place: 3 points
4th place: 2 points
All others: 1 point

Due to the constant need of staff to perform administrative duties, the following points will be rewarded based on which actions are performed.

Keep Score:         1 point
Keep Time:          1 point
Keep Score/Time: 1 point
Take door money: 1 point
Fundraise :            2 points

These points are to be supplemental to performing in the slam.  Supplemental points can only comprise 50% of your earned total.  Administrative positions are open to all, and are given on first come first serve basis.  If there is any dispute, positions will be decided by open competition decided by the slam master.  These points can not be combined with each other in the same night.

There will also be open mic/theme slams on off weeks.  These will each have a theme, and may not be contingent on the poet performing his or her own work. The points rewarded for these will vary.

All regular slams are subject to official PSI rules.

Season schedule will be as follows

Slam Off

1st Place: 15 points
2nd Place: 7 points
3rd Place:  5 points
All others:  1 point

The top twelve poets at the end of the regular season will compete in the Slam Off
If a piece wins in the finals of a slam it can not be used again until
the end of the season.

The person with the most overall points at the end of the season will be considered the Team Captain of The Knoxville Honey Badgers.

The person that wins the End of Season Slam Off, will be the IWPS Representative.

The highest scoring female of the season will be the WOWPS Representative.

At the end of the slam off, the highest scoring 5 poets will make up the Knoxville Honey Badgers. The fifth poet will be considered an alternate.

Any remaining poets can comprise additional teams in order of rank.  They will be permitted to travel and compete, but will be required to organize, practice, travel, and fundraise entirely on their own.  These teams are not permitted to register for PSI events as venue representatives.

All members of the Knoxville Honey Badgers will be required to practice 1-3 times weekly, or at the Slam Master's discretion.  For every missed practice or fundraising event, the poet will be docked 5 points from their season total.  Once the poet reaches zero points, he or she will be reviewed for dismissal from the team.

All members of the team will be required to help raise funds for the team's traveling efforts, and may be required to pay for some of their travels themselves.

Upon earning a spot on the Knoxville Poetry Slam team, all members will be asked to sign a contract which informs applicants of the terms and conditions of being a member of the Knoxville Poetry Slam team.

Unless approved by the Slam Master, one cannot compete in both IWPS and WOWPS

Curious about this~why?

This is a pretty convoluted process and I'd urge you to consider simplifying it.

Are these points cumulative within one event? For example, if you take door money and fundraise, do you get 3 points?

--- Quote from: plunderphonics on November 03, 2011, 09:40:32 PM ---These points are to be supplemental to performing in the slam.  These points are not valid without a top 3 finish in a slam at some point during the season.  Furthermore, suplemental points can only comprise 50% of your earned total, unless otherwise approved by the Slam Master.

--- End quote ---

So do the supplemental points max out at the points earned at the points earned in slams? For example, if you have 10 points from slams and 13 points from supplemental points, do you actually have only 20 points combined instead of 23?

--- Quote from: plunderphonics on November 03, 2011, 09:40:32 PM ---The following events take place during the slam season, and being involved in these events will prevent a poet from earning points, therefore points will be rewarded for the following.

Feature out of town: 2 points
Compete as an IWPS poet: 2 points
Other points for major out of town poetry events may be rewarded as well, please contact the Slam Master for approval.

Are these considered supplemental points?

Interesting.

--- Quote from: plunderphonics on November 03, 2011, 09:40:32 PM ---At the end of the slam off, the highest scoring 4 poets will make up the Knoxville Honey Badgers. The fourth poet will be considered an alternate.

One slot will be reserved for the Slammaster.

That underlined bit puts you in violation of our rules and could disqualify your team from competing in NPS. See page 19 of the PSi Handbook:

4. Any team or individual representing the Certified Poetry
Slam at a PSi event must be selected from an open
competition.

Since the SlamMaster seems to be an appointed member of the team, and not one selected through open competition, there's a problem. See: "Team Tempe, 2007"

Edited.

This is our first year working a points system.  Idea was to set up a solid system and tear off the fat as we go.

Slam master slot was removed, wasn't even thinking about that when we put it in.

Also, in regards to supplemental points, any points earned while not directly competing in a Knoxville Poetry Slam COMPETITION are considered supplemental.  I will remove the word from the phrase "supplemental slam" to try to clear things up.

Also, in regards to IWPS and WOWPS, the idea was to give oppurtunities to both geders in the city to compete at a national level, but that can be pulled if need be.

Also to give multiple poets a chance to compete at a national level.

Is the rule that the REP can't be the same person, or that the same person can not compete in both competitions? If it's the former, that could make sense to me, because you want to give two different people the opportunity to represent your slam at a national level. Not something I'd do myself, but I can understand the reasoning.

If you are saying that a woman can not even compete in both slams, well, that runs counter to the whole purpose of having a WOWPS rep, and it potentially violates the "open slam" rule again.
