Some things to see and do in West Palm Beach...

The Palm Beach Zoo: http://www.palmbeachzoo.org/index.html

Not as large as say your Omaha or San Diego Zoo, but with its focus on South and Central America, Florida, and Asia, it is a great place to relax and see animals in habitats that replicate their home turf.

The South Florida Science Museum: http://www.sfsm.org/index.html

More kid oriented, but they've got some interesting exhibits, including an Egypt exhibit, the planetarium, and the aquariums.

The Flagler Musem: http://www.flaglermuseum.us/

See how rich, bloated plutocrats lived at the turn of the century!  Actually, it's quite interesting if you're into history, art, or architecture.  Plus there's high tea with crumpets and doilies.

JFK's Bomb Shelter!: http://www.roadsideamerica.com/search/tip

The Kennedy's summer home was in Palm Beach, and JFK was coming there before and during his presidency, so the military build a bomb shelter on Peanut Island.  It wasn't used after that, and became a place where Jimmy Buffett listening potheads would go to avoid "The Man".  "The Man" officially reclaimed it a few years ago, and turned it into a museum.  The island's only accessible by boat, but the county offers a water taxi to the island.   There's also a Coast Guard museum on the island as well.

More to come...

The Norton Museum of Art:

http://www.norton.org/Museum/tabid/36/Default.aspx

More or less walkable from the hotel, this is Palm Beach County's premeire art museum.  They change out their collections fairly frequently, so it's worth a stop-by while you're there.  See if you can tell what's wrong with the statues of Artemis & Actaeon at the front of the gallery!

The Jupiter Lighthouse:

http://www.jupiterlighthouse.org/

If you're taking the I-95 to West Palm Beach (or back out), consider stopping by this piece of old-tymey Florida goodness - if the Pepperidge Farms guy and the Gorton's fisherman got married (not yet legal in Florida), this is their dream house. It's a drive from West Palm Beach, but it's worth a stop, if just because the county really did a job in restoring this, one of the last great lighthouses in the South.

The Mounts Botanical Garden:

http://www.mounts.org/

Northerners, people from the West, really anyone who doesn't live south of Orlando and has an affinity for botany would do well to stop by here.  South Florida is officially a sub-tropical climate, which means during the summer, it's tropical, and in the winter it's temperate, and that means if we weren't constantly hacking away at it, South Florida would be covered in green probably within a span of two or three days.  It's an enjoyable visit, staffed by friendly volunteers, and birds and butterflies abound.

The Turn of the Century Electrotherapy Museum:

http://www.electrotherapymuseum.com/

Do you think Thomas Edison was a punk?  I do.  Did Standard Oil supress Nikola Tesla's discoveries in order to kill the electric car?  Probably.   Do you want to see arcs of electricty shoot through the air and make your hair stand on end?  Damn right you do.   This is your place.

How about some shopping?

Worth Avenue:

http://www.worth-avenue.com/

Be assured, you'll find what you're looking for...  Along with stuff that you want, but can't afford.   Also, snooty clerks!

Ron-Jon Surf Shop:

http://www.ronjons.com/DisplayContent.aspx?ContentID=39&MenuGroup=2&SelectedItem=4

This is actaully well to the north of West Palm Beach, in the town of Cocoa Beach, but if you're travelling by car along the I-95 to West Palm Beach, why not stop at this quintessential Florida tourist trap?  Open 24 hours a day, because you need a surf board at 2AM in the morning!

City Place:

http://www.cityplace.com/

Just like your mall back home, but humid.   Pretty much a catch-all for the generic stuff you probably don't need, but Madison Avenue is telling you that you must have.   For instance: they have a Gap, a Gap Body, a Gap Kids, and a Gap Baby -  Because you've gotta get this [FILE NOT FOUND].

If you're looking for a specialty shop, let me know.  My crack team of Florida layabouts can get you an answer tout suite.

Downtown I don't know.   The joints I knew were Tom's Place (down in Boca though - HOWEVER you MUST buy the sauce, it'll be available at Publix) and Mississippi Sweets, which was in Lake Worth.  Blue Front BBQ was amazing, but they closed years ago.

I'll find out what's good downtown.  As well as a breakfast place.

I am willing to catch a ride to a place that might not be downtown, but still in town.

I know it's hto down there, but you guys have to understand what's up with me and BBQ.
