If you can't make the registration sessions, you will be unregistered and unable to participate. If you make registration but can't make the mandatory orientation meetings, you will not be permitted to participate. The old way of thinking that you can just show up in time for the bout has gone the way of the Great Auk. Check out the times for registration and mandatory orientation meetings in the News Box up on the top right corner of this page. No one likes to hear that they will be excluded. But please bear in mind, I don't like to say it either. And I really don't like to DO it, but if I have to DO, that's why I'm paid the big bucks.

I don't see a News Box on my screen... is that a browser issue (I'm using Firefox v. 2.0.0.4)?

Just curious,
Matt

Nope.  See the row that says "Home, Help, Search, Profile, Logout"?

There is an arrow next to that which is probably pointed in the down direction.  If you click that, then you'll see your user info box as well as the news box and key stats box.  It will be right under the words "simple machines forum".

Question about registration -

is the 1 pm - 5 pm an open door sort of thing, or do I need to plan on being there for that four-hour stretch?

This would be amazing information to have on the NPS web site.

You will not have to be at registration for entire time. You will just register your team and then go enjoy Austin until orientation or whatever other activity you take part in that day.

Related registration question - I'm pretty sure that the handbook that just got sent out said maximum 5 poets registered per team. The format, if I understand correctly, is up to five poets on stage at a time this year. Does combining these two pieces of data = no sixth person on the team as an alternate? If a sixth person is allowed as an alternate, should that person register and attend orientation as normal?

There are no more alternates.  You either have teams of 3, 4 or 5.

Registration and orientation are only mandatory for competing poets, right?  Our coach isn't getting in until Tuesday afternoon, but I'm assuming that when we attend orientation we can pick up her pass for the week.  Or does she need to be present too?

Passes are distributed to each person attending orientation. That's how we enforce the mandatory part of attendance. Must be present to win.
