We are mainstream!
« on: July 24, 2005, 07:41:22 PM »
Watching the Simpsons tonight and the town of Springfield needed to expand it's tourism industry to bring money into town. The mayor calls for "any crazy suggestions" to bring tourism back. In the ensuing list, someone suggested Poetry Slam. Alas, slam was not ultimately selected as they went for legalizing same sex marriage instead.

I've never been so proud!

steve,

I saw this episode a number of months back...it's one of a few mentions on "poetry slam" on network tv.  Maybe Fox is interested in television NPS?

Now, I'm trying to remember what other shows I saw it on.  There was one where a character was going to perform in a poetry slam....damn..what was it.  They never actually showed the event itself - I remember that much.

I should start remember stuff more better.

Why not combine shows and do haiku only?
Dances With the Stars + Surreal Life+ Last Poet Standing = Drunk, dancing, half naked Kelly Monaco, Ron Jeremy and Mini-me in a haiku slam!

I hate to admit reading the comics in the Detroit Free Press, but there have been several references to poetry slams in several of the strips over the past couple of years.

It's only a matter of time until one sleepless a.m. finds you flipping through channels and finding Slam on ESPN or the Game Network.

YEA...it will be on the Bravo channel....the cast will include:

four REAL slam poets

one washed up rapper looking for one last thrust for glory.

one actor who was the shit when he/she was a child but know earns a living reciting lines from their old movies and TV show!

one person who thought they were auditioning for the Real World.

and finally

the english professor who's job is to create havoc with the cast  by critiquing everyones and giving high scores to the rapper. thus creating a foul mood among the cast.
one world + one race = onelove

Another tv spoken word siting

I was watching a rerun of Girlfriends last night and the friends appear to hang out regularly at this spoken word club in L.A. One of them got interested in this charismatic poet, who turned out to have been played by Saul Williams. I was impressed with the poet's (Saul's) centeredness and certainty that he had an important message to deliver.

haven't personally seen the episode, but i say, my sources are good darn it.

was watching Law & Order last night, and a college id got killed in Harlem and one of the detectives said,

"what the hell was he doing up here, poetry slam at the Sugar Shack?"

were thought to be insane
by those who could not hear the music...

Can't forget this line from the comedy CD by Triumph the Insult Comic Dog (yeah the puppet), fom the song "Lick Myself":

Lick myself
gotta go
you guys have fun at the broadway show
Lick myself
I'm the star
have a good time at the sushi bar
Lick myself
eat my ham
have a good time at the poetry slam
Lick myself
suck and squirt
you guys have fun at the Beck concert
